La Colonia’s boxing center is headed for much-needed repairs, following the Oxnard City Council’s approval of plans to renovate and rehabilitate the aging gymnasium. After reviewing
architectural drawings of the redesigned boxing center, council members Tuesday said they liked the new look of the barn-like building at 520 E. First St. Council members still need to
decide what color the building should be. The boxing center, which attracts about 50 boys a day, has a deteriorating roof and other deficiencies. City staff members estimate that the bill
for renovation will be $260,000, with $182,000 coming from a federal grant. The popular youth boxing program will continue to operate out of a gym on East Seventh Street until repairs are
completed. MORE TO READ
