Saying that they see no other viable means of recovering from Orange County’s bankruptcy, members of the City Council have voted to support Measure R, the proposed half-cent sales tax
increase. “Although it’s convenient and appropriate to cast the blame in a specific direction, the council feels that the bankruptcy is a [countywide] problem,” Assistant City Manager Tim
O’Donnell said. Council members, he said, “feel a need to accept some responsibility for the impact that the bankruptcy has on individuals . . . who will not be able to receive critical
services from the county if the measure fails.” In addition, O’Donnell said, if Measure R fails, Brea’s cost of borrowing money in the future will probably increase, property values could
drop and the city might not receive money it is owed by the county. The council’s resolution supporting Measure R passed in a 3-0 vote. Councilwoman Kathryn E. Wiser abstained, and
