Arianna Huffington, ex-wife of Michael Huffington, who literally attempted to buy a seat in the Senate, die-hard Republican reactionary, has the unbelievable nerve to criticize the president

for at least making a stab at trying to do something positive for the poor (“Welcome to the High-Gloss Poverty Tour,” Commentary, July 8). When will Republicans (who haven’t done one thing

for anyone who’s poor, black or hungry since Lincoln died) quit making fools of themselves? This blind hatred for everything that is associated with Bill Clinton is unhealthy for both the

nation and individuals such as Huffington. Now that Lady Huffington is so attuned to the plight of the needy, she should invite Rep. Maxine Waters over to her mansion for tea to discuss the

whole deplorable situation. “High gloss” indeed! CHARLES REILLY Garden Grove * Huffington justly takes Clinton to task for his tour of the poorest parts of our wealthy nation. It is very

little, very late. As one of those citizens bone-tired of partisan diatribes, however, I would have preferred a concise prescription for overcoming this disgraceful problem. DANIEL SULLIVAN

San Diego * Re “Clinton Visit Illuminates Depth of Poverty on Sioux Reservation,” July 8: Indians living on reservations are the most governmentally controlled group of people in this

nation. It makes one wonder about the effectiveness of the welfare programs, does it not? BILL STINDE Torrance * Clinton’s visit to Indian tribes in South Dakota concluded that the area was

“probably the most extreme case of poverty in the country.” How ironic that we welcome all other foreigners with open arms and give them great jobs and homes and cars, while the original

Americans end up in poverty with no help from the government! LYNN WILKERSON Arcadia MORE TO READ
