GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR BANANAS IS EASIER THAN EVER THANKS TO THE NEW GUIDANCE OFFERED BY THE SUPERMARKET GIANT 11:05, 21 May 2025 For those of us looking to get more out of our
supermarket shops and lengthen the lifespan of our fresh fruit and vegetables, a new Tesco hack for bananas could be incredibly useful. Reducing waste and finding new uses for our food items
is particularly important to households across the country at the moment thanks to the cost-of-living crisis - so the supermarket has issued some helpful advice. When it comes to freezing
bananas, these need to be peeled first before being placed in the freezer whole or in slices. Tesco advised: “These can be used straight from the freezer, perfect for cold, thick smoothies
or snacking on." Another fruit that can be frozen is avocado, which has a reputation for going from under-ripe to over-ripe very quickly. However, if you have a ripe avocado or two that
you know you won’t eat in time, you can peel and freeze them in chunks. These can be added to a blender to make smoothies or defrosted and used to make guacamole. The supermarket also
revealed that you can freeze wine. Article continues below If you open a bottle but don’t finish it, you can pour the rest into a freezer bag or ice cube trays. The frozen wine can be added
to recipes like gravy, risottos, or pasta sauces as needed. While potatoes can last for a while if stored in a dark, cool cupboard, you can save yourself some time when it comes to making
roasties by peeling lots of them in one go. These can then be blanched until they are just cooked, then spread out on a tray and popped in the freezer until solid. Transfer them to a freezer
bag - now you have perfectly prepped roast potatoes ready for cooking whenever you need them. Courtney Pallett, Tesco campaigns manager, said: "Your freezer is your friend when it
comes to reducing food waste and avoiding throwing food away. “Most of the foods that often end up in the bin, such as bananas and avocados, can be saved by freezing them to use later.” The
supermarket also explained that there are some simple tips you need to follow to make the most out of your freezer. The first is to do with storage - the fuller your freezer, the more
effectively it will work, as it can retain the cold better. Tesco said: “There’s a fine line, though: don’t overfill, or the air won’t circulate properly." The ideal temperature for
your appliance is -18°C, so you should always check it is at the right level before adding food to it. Article continues below When it comes to placing food in the freezer, you will need to
make sure it is wrapped or sealed properly. This is because any air left in with your food can result in freezer burn, which “dulls the taste and texture”. A good way to keep your freezer
organised is to use permanent marker pens to write key information on the freezer bags, like what food is inside, the date you froze it on, and how many portions are in there.
