Writer13:59, 03 Jun 2025Updated 10:30, 04 Jun 2025IKEA opened the Plan and Order point at the Stockport Merseyway Shopping Centre in March 2023 IKEA has announced that one of its stores in
Greater Manchester will be closing down in just a matter of weeks.
The Swedish retailer has confirmed that its Plan and Order point at the Stockport Merseyway Shopping Centre will close its doors later this month. The unit - a smaller store dedicated to
kitchen, bedroom, and living room planning - only opened two years ago.
The store was designed for customers to visit for home furnishing advice and expertise to help design their ideal space, including a chance to create tailor-made 3D interior plans with
IKEA’s team of interior designers.
IKEA has said that the decision to close the store has been made following ‘a result of valuable learnings’ which has identified that customers now want a different shopping experience -
favouring the likes of Click and Collect and return services.
Whilst a number of Plan and Order points across the country, including stores in Dundee, Hull and York, will be adapted for customer demand - including offering a small selection of home
furnishing accessories to buy - the Stockport branch will close altogether.

customers now being directed to the next nearest main IKEA store, which is in Ashton-under-Lyne in Tameside. Stockport residents can also now pick up their IKEA purchases from Tesco Extra
Stockport and Tesco Extra Stretford as part of Click and Collect.
Salma Azad, IKEA area manager said: “After careful evaluation, we’ve made the difficult decision to close the IKEA Plan and Order Point at Merseyway Shopping Centre.
“In the two years since opening, we’ve taken valuable learnings, including how our customers prefer to meet IKEA, and we’ll take these insights into future openings, to serve shoppers in a
more impactful way.

Stockport customers have been told that the nearest IKEA store to them will now be the huge shop in Ashton-under-Lyne(Image: Manchester Family/MEN) “I want to sincerely thank all of the
customers that have shopped with us in this time. IKEA Manchester, a store locals know and love, will continue to be the closest hub for home planning, meatballs and everything in between.”

north west'. However, it was not without its criticism.
Some customers said they were disappointed with the limited selection of items available at the store, which was limited to a small number of accessories and instead favoured the likes of
kitchen units and worktop surfaces.
Earlier this week, IKEA also revealed it had opened its very own hotel in the Canary Islands. The property will include cheap rooms, a swimming pool and breakfast included - and also
features some of their most popular homeware and items.
