hope for them to live pain-free. What are some things these individuals can do, to help reduce or even eliminate their pain? In this interview series, called “Becoming Pain-Free: How to
Alleviate Chronic Pain” we are talking to medical professionals, pain management specialists and authors who can share their insights and strategies about how to alleviate chronic pain. As a
part of this series we again had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Len Lopez._ _Nutrition and fitness expert Dr. Len Lopez has been helping people Eat Right Train Smart and Think Better for
over 25 years. His passion for natural, holistic medicine evolved into sports medicine and fitness training. He has been featured in a number of publications, authored books, became a public
speaker and even became an inventor._ THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US IN THIS INTERVIEW SERIES! BEFORE WE DIVE IN, OUR READERS WOULD LOVE TO “GET TO KNOW YOU” BETTER. CAN YOU SHARE YOUR
“BACKSTORY” WITH US? A little over 25 years ago, I started out as a Chiropractic Sports Physician, and expanded my practice even more so into natural holistic medicine, which got me to
become a Nutritionist as well as a Strength and Condition Coach. Fortunately or unfortunately, I’ve had my ups and downs, made some choices that weren’t smart, but I do believe I’ve learned
from them, which is the most important thing. CAN YOU SHARE THE MOST INTERESTING STORY THAT HAPPENED TO YOU SINCE YOU STARTED YOUR CAREER? WHAT WERE THE MAIN LESSONS OR TAKEAWAYS FROM THAT
STORY? I used to speak to the graduating classes and would tell them just because your first name is doctor, “don’t expect riches and glory to automatically come your way.” In my opinion,
people and patient don’t care too much about all the certifications and letters after your name. They simply want to know, if you can truly help them. IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT OUR MISTAKES CAN
BE OUR GREATEST TEACHERS. CAN YOU SHARE A STORY ABOUT A MISTAKE YOU MADE WHEN YOU WERE FIRST STARTING? CAN YOU TELL US WHAT LESSON YOU LEARNED FROM THAT? My biggest mistake, which is common
for a lot of people is that I wasn’t exactly sure, what my goals were. Yes, I wanted to be a doctor, but I hadn’t thought enough about exactly what type practice I wanted to have? Or what
type of patients I wanted to attract? I wish I would have known some of the things I know now, about simple goal setting and personal growth. Not just for my professional career, but also
for my own personal development. WHEN IT COMES TO HEALTH AND WELLNESS, HOW IS THE WORK YOU ARE DOING HELPING TO MAKE A BIGGER IMPACT IN THE WORLD? I believe people are looking for more
natural, holistic ways of health and healing. A lot of people understand the importance and benefit of drugs or medications, but there is always some side effect that sometimes doesn’t
happen immediately. Take for example a medication that helps with your symptoms, but it also makes your gut, kidneys or liver a bit more permeable of specific molecules or nutrients. You
might not notice it immediately, but after a few weeks or months, a new symptom creeps up on you that you assume isn’t related to the medication. The normal response is that if there was a
problem with that med, you would have felt the negative effects immediately. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work that way. LET’S JUMP TO THE MAIN FOCUS OF THIS SERIES. FOR THE BENEFIT OF
OUR READERS, CAN YOU PLEASE TELL US WHY YOU ARE AN AUTHORITY ON THE SUBJECT OF CHRONIC PAIN? First, people assume that chiropractors are pain specialist, which they are for the most part.
But when you combine the physical adjustments and Add the various nutritional guidance to help your body’s natural anti-inflammatory response — you can get some great pain relief, naturally!
CAN YOU PLEASE SHARE WITH US A FEW OF THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF CHRONIC PAIN? Here are 3 common examples and one not so common cause 1. There’s your typical sprain and strain injury to your
ankle, knee’s, low back, neck, etcetera. 2. There’s your wear and tear like ailments such as arthritis, tendonitis, and bursuitis. 3. There’s also the physcial pounding we place on our body
(feet, knee’s, back, etcetera) from exercise as well as, gardening, weekend warriors, playing with the kids, etcetera. 4. A less commonly known cause of inflammation comes from our gut and
all the digestive irritation and inflammation that comes from a bad or wrong diet. THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF PAIN THAT PEOPLE STRUGGLE WITH. WHICH SPECIFIC FORM OF PAIN WOULD YOU
LIKE TO FOCUS ON IN THIS INTERVIEW? WHY THAT ONE? Let me answer it this way. Inflammation triggers pain! It doesn’t matter the source of the inflammation! If you can reduce all the
inflammatory compounds you are producing within your body — you can reduce pain! That’s the whole premise of aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs, they are trying to chemically disrupt the
inflammatory, pain pathways. To use an analogy. Inflammation is like a fire. How many fires do you have burning within your body? * Did you wrench your back? * Are your arthritic knees
acting up? * Did you shoot hoops with the kids? * Is your tummy also on fire and bloated? Do you have enough water (are your producing enough of your own natural anti-inflammatory molecules)
to put all those fires out? Your body is its own pharmacy and can produce its own Natural Anti-inflammatory compounds to combat the pain. Let me paint you a picture, your body needs
saturated fats (omega 6) to produce the inflammatory response, it’s an important function. But your body NEED’S unsaturated (omega 3) fats to produce your body’s Natural Anti-Inflammatory
response. If your diet is loaded with omega 6 fats and not enough omega 3’s, your body will be more prone to inflammation and pain. But, if you change that ratio and increase your omega 3’s
which are called _ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS, _you can reduce some of that pain, naturally, without the aid of a medication. AS I LISTEN TO WHAT YOU ARE TELLING ME, WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP OUR
BODY DEAL WITH OUR PAIN, IN A MORE NATURAL WAY? Here’s a simple DIY TEST you can do to see if your diet has enough omega 3s to make enough Anti-inflammatory molecules to reduce your pain.
What we are going to do essentially give your body more omega 3’s, as if you were eating fish everyday. Here’s what you do. Go grab a bottle of fish oils at your local health food store. You
want a bottle with 60 capsules. - For the next 10 days, swallow 6 capsules a day, with food. (2 capsules 3 times a day or 3 capsules twice a day). - If in the next 10 days, if you notice
some of your pain decreasing, that’s a signal that your diet, doesn’t have enough Omega 3’s to make enough of your own natural anti-inflammatory compounds. What you do with that information
is your choice. - You can change your diet and add more omega 3’s (fish, olive oil, nuts, seeds, etc). - or continue to supplement with MORE omega 3s and don’t change your diet. Yes, a lot
of people are taking omega 3s, but is taking one or two a day enough for all the inflammatory fires you have going on in your body, especially if you aren’t going to change your diet? I like
to think of omega 3’s like pushups and pullups…..sometimes you need to do more than 3 pushups and pullups to get in better shape. IF YOU COULD START A MOVEMENT THAT WOULD BRING THE MOST
AMOUNT OF WELLNESS TO THE MOST AMOUNT OF PEOPLE, WHAT WOULD THAT BE? It starts with information and locus of control. Give people the information that easily explains how the healing of
their body works. Then leave it to them to decide what path they want to follow. Not everyone wants to change their diet, take a supplement, exercise or simply rest more? There’s an old
quote that says, “people spend their health to gain their wealth, then later spend their wealth to regain their health.” WHAT IS THE BEST WAY FOR OUR READERS TO FURTHER FOLLOW YOUR WORK
