03 Jun 2025Updated 09:11, 03 Jun 2025 Brits on holiday in Turkey recounted the harrowing moment a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Marmaris, prompting some to rush and shield children from

harm. The early morning quake on Tuesday, June 3, sadly resulted in the loss of a 14-year-old girl's life, according to reports. The Turkish disaster control authority stated the

tremors occurred at 2.17am, causing chaos in Marmaris and neighbouring regions, including the Greek island of Rhodes, where people were roused from their sleep. The European-Mediterranean

Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a separate 6.2 magnitude quake hitting Rhodes the same morning. British tourists shared their terrifying experiences in Turkey, describing their

desperate attempts to protect their loved ones. Rebecca, a holidaymaker, shared her ordeal on TikTok, admitting it was "so scary." She recounted: "The whole bedroom was just

shaking like crazy. The bed was just vibrating like crazy - we ran in to protect the children, just jumped on them. "One hotel worker just jumped out of the window, because the whole

building was just shaking like crazy. The whole hotel has had to just come outside now. Fair play, they're giving water and everything out to everybody, but we have to wait for

aftershocks, so we have to stay outside." WARNING: BELOW VIDEO MAY CONTAIN OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE Article continues below Rebecca expressed her hope for everyone's safety following the

recent incident, and she was not alone in sharing her ordeal. In Greece, another individual on social media, known by the username strawbz938, shared: "Earthquake just shook the life

out of our hotel. "Scooping up my babies and we are flying home. Hope everyone's safe in Greece." Below Rebecca's video post, one person remarked: "Rhodos here. We

felt everything from the quake. We woke up - everything shaking. So scary - didn't sleep anymore. Stay safe." Someone else took to the comments section, stating: "I'm in

Marmaris - that was a weird experience to wake up to." Meanwhile, a third user chimed in with: "We're in Dalaman. We felt it too. I must admit, I had to change my underpants.

This was a first for me." There was also a concern from an expectant mother who said: "I'm 16 weeks pregnant, and got woken up by it. Couldn't sleep - hope you and your

family stay safe." Initially, Marmaris governor Idris Akbiyik reported no severe damage immediately following the event. However, updates confirmed that 69 people suffered injuries

after panic-induced leaps from heights, and a 14-year-old girl tragically died. A translated post which was shared by Idris Akbiyik is reported to read: "During the earthquake in

Fethiye, our 14-year-old daughter, Afranur Günlü, was taken to hospital due to a panic attack, but unfortunately lost her life despite all interventions. In Mula and its districts, 14 of

our 69 citizens who jumped from heights due to panic were treated on site. Article continues below "Eight people were treated and discharged on an outpatient basis. The examinations and

treatments of 46 of our citizens continue in the emergency room. "I wish God's mercy upon our deceased Afranur child and offer my condolences to his family. I offer my best wishes

to our citizens affected by the earthquake. May God protect our country and our nation from disasters." Turkey, situated on significant fault lines, is no stranger to seismic activity,

with earthquakes being a relatively common occurrence. In 2023, the nation was rocked by a catastrophic 7.8 magnitude quake that claimed the lives of more than 53,000 people.
