Jay slater's final steps as he set off with 'cocktail of drugs' in his system

Play all audios:

Jay Slater captured his final moments on Snapchat as he messaged pals while he had a "cocktail of drugs" in his system. The 19-year-old from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, died after

he suffered multiple serious injuries after he fell in a rocky area near the village of Masca, in Tenerife, in July last year. An inquest held at Preston Crown Court heard how key witnesses

had failed to respond and did not give evidence, adding to the heartbreak of his family. But some of Jay's last moments were revealed, including footage that showed him in the back of a

car in a mountainous area and heading toward to an AirBnB far away from his accommodation. Spanish authorities carried out a toxicology test on Jay's body, finding ketamine, ecstasy as

well as cocaine that had been taken at the same time as his consumption of alcohol. Former UK police detective Mark Williams-Thomas says he uncovered an audio recording that could shed

light on Jay going missing in Tenerife but had faced challenges in trying to engage with Spanish cops. _FOLLOW THIS LIVE BLOG FOR UPDATES FROM PRESTON CORONER'S COURT..._ 15:17KEY EVENT

MAJOR STUMBLING BLOCK COULD PREVENT TRAGIC MYSTERY BEING SOLVED A major stumbling block in the Jay Slater case could prevent his family from ever finding out what happened to him, it is

feared. The inquest into the 19-year-old's death in Tenerife was adjourned last week at the request of his mum Debbie, who said it must not go ahead until multiple key witnesses are

tracked down to give evidence. In what could prove a major obstacle in the Slater family's search for answers, police have now admitted they have no power to force any witnesses to

attend the inquest. 14:38Benedict Tetzlaff-Deas WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN AN INQUEST IS ADJOURNED? An inquest is usually adjourned so the coroner can temporarily suspends proceedings to a later

date. This may be done because there is a need further evidence, such as medical reports or witness statements. In the Jay Slater case, his mum Debbie Duncan has asked for an adjournement

until it is confirmed that witnesses that were with Jay are able to attend. In other cases, a case may also be adjourned if there are ongoing legal proceedings within the UK. An inquest will

typically resume once the necessary information is gathered or other legal matters have concluded. 12:22Benedict Tetzlaff-Deas 'SPANISH AUTHORITIES HAVE TRIED TO BE AS HELPFUL AS THEY

CAN' It was also heard last week that while Spanish authorities have been "helpful", the reluctance of witnesses to speak to the inquest and the fact that Jay Slater died

abroad had complicated proceedings. The coroner added: "Statements have been coming in very late in the day. Investigating a death in a foreign country is always extremely difficult.

"In this case the Spanish authorities have tried to be as helpful as they can but we have difficulty in trying to locate various people. In cases where drugs are involved witnesses do

not wish to speak to the authorities." 11:43Benedict Tetzlaff-Deas AI TRANSLATION OF DOCUMENTS CREATED 'FURTHER PROBLEMS' Dr Adeley also said that AI-translated documents from

Spain had complicated the inquest. He said: "There are further problems in that the initial statements were given in English, translated into Spanish and then we got the Spanish

translated. AI has then had terrible problems translating it. "Even then it's not perfect English. This has caused a considerable amount of difficulty." 09:37Benedict

Tetzlaff-Deas SPANISH CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION 'HAS IMPACTED UK INQUEST' Lancashire's Senior Coroner, Dr James Adeley, said last week that the differences between the Spanish

investigation and his own had impacted the inquest, which is currently adjourned. He explained: "They are looking for criminality so their investigation has a completely different

course. "This has created problems with statements. Their statements are directed to a different interest." 08:18Benedict Tetzlaff-Deas HOW DID JAY SLATER DIE? A post-mortem

examination found that 19-year-old Jay Slater died of traumatic head injuries consistent with a fall from height. His body was found by police in the bottom of a ravine in Tenerife on July

15, just under a month after he had been reported missing on the island. 07:19Benedict Tetzlaff-Deas WHY POLICE CAN'T FORCE WITNESSES TO ATTEND INQUEST In a statement over the weekend,

Lancashire Police told the Mirror: "First and foremost, our thoughts remain with Jay's family and friends at this distressing time. "We supported HM Coroner by making

extensive efforts to contact a number of witnesses ahead of the inquest, both in Lancashire and more widely. However we understand some of these individuals may be abroad and had already

left the country when these efforts were made." "We have no jurisdiction in such circumstances to compel someone to attend. We will continue to support the coroner ahead of the

resumption of the inquest. "Once again, our thoughts are with Jay's loved ones." 05:50Paige Ingram SEARCH AND RESCUE EXPERTS DESCRIBE ROUTE TAKEN BY JAY SLATER Marieke Krans
