and Discovery (GLAD) alerts provide weekly and location-specific information on tree-cover loss detected through satellite imaging, and are freely available to users through a multi-language
interface with minimal technical requirements (Global Forest Watch). Writing in _Nature Climate Change_ in January 2021, Moffette et al. analysed how such alerts affected deforestation
rates in 22 tropical countries between 2011 and 2018, encompassing the gradual rollout of the alert system from 2016. Simple availability of the alerts did not affect deforestation on
average or in any particular region, but active subscription to the alerts by users with intent to control deforestation decreased the probability of deforestation in the assessed African
countries by an average of 18%. The same effect was not observed to a significant level in the assessed Asian and South American countries and the impacts of the alerts are increasing over
time. When accounting for existing monitoring mechanisms in the different regions, the authors suggest that the alerts may both support enforcement of anti-deforestation policies and promote
policy development. This is a preview of subscription content, access via your institution ACCESS OPTIONS Access through your institution Access Nature and 54 other Nature Portfolio
