It was a role said to have had Jennifer Lopez’s name on it, but Mexican actress Salma Hayek, 34, said on Thursday that she, not J.Lo nor even Madonna (who was also mentioned) will portray

artist Frida Kahlo in a biographical movie for Miramax, called, appropriately enough, “Frida Kahlo.” Shooting begins this weekend in Mexico City,, Hayek said at a press conference. Kahlo,

who died at the age of 47 in 1954 after a long series of illnesses, was twice married to muralist Diego Rivera (to be played by Alfred Molina). Confined to a wheelchair for much of her life

as a result of injuries suffered in a trolley car accident, Kahlo still managed to leave her mark as a painter and political activist whose circle included communist leader Leon Trotsky. ”

Frida Kahlo was always ahead of her times. She had a great individuality,” said Hayek, citing the artist’s “broken body but . . . indestructible spirit.”
