A team of students at Hampton University recently won third place in Ally Financial Inc.’s second annual Moguls in the Making business plan competition for historically Black colleges and
universities. The Hampton University team pitched a nonprofit idea called The Rebirth Project, which would focus on redeveloping blighted residential areas of Detroit. The plan would include
training local residents to be real estate developers, learn homebuilding trades and become homeowners. Brandy James, Lydia Makondo, Jordan Nobles, Rachel Ransom and Jacob Robinson
represented Hampton University. The team’s members were among 570 students who applied. Ten teams ended up competing. Alabama A&M University won first place, Florida A&M finished
second and Hampton University tied for third place with a combined team from Spelman and Morehouse colleges in Atlanta. Third place prizes include internships with Ally for each team member,
individual $2,500 scholarships, a laptop and an Amazon Echo. Because of the pandemic, the teams’ live presentations to judges were made online on Oct. 12. Originally Published: October 19,
