Afghanistan has sent 1,000 troops to mountainous Panjshir province, about 60 miles northeast of Kabul, after an avalanche killed at least 162 residents. Some people are being pulled alive
from their snow-buried homes, the acting provincial governor says, but the death toll is expected to rise. Heavy winter snows have wreaked havoc in four Afghan provinces over the past week.
