Gabrielle KnowlesThe West Australian An almost 5m great white shark circled two fishermen on their 6m boat off City Beach yesterday morning, prompting authorities to close the beach as a
precaution. Nick, the boat owner, raised the alarm when the pair spotted the white pointer because there had been divers nearby. "It was huge," he said. The men had been about 3km
offshore and just finished fishing about 10.15am when they saw the predator. Nick said the shark was placid and circled the boat a few times. "Its fin surfaced a couple of times and
that's when I called Fisheries," he said. It soon swam under the boat and disappeared. He said they were about to go to warn people they had seen diving for rock lobsters about 1km
away. But they then saw them surface, pack up their gear and leave. "It was perfect timing for them," he said. Abalone diver Greg Pickering survived his second shark attack in
nine years when a suspected great white mauled him as he dived near Esperance last week. Lifeguards shut City Beach as a precaution after yesterday's sighting. But it was reopened about
an hour later after the Westpac rescue helicopter saw the shark heading offshore. GET THE LATEST NEWS FROM THEWEST.COM.AU IN YOUR INBOX. Sign up for our emails
