A former San Diego police supervisor will take over as Palm Springs police chief on Monday, city officials said. Andrew Mills will begin at his new position at the Palm Springs Police

Department in advance of his Nov. 18 swearing-in at a city council meeting, the city announced in a social media post. Mills has been in law enforcement since 1983, when he started as a

patrol officer with the San Diego Police Department, rising to become a lieutenant who oversaw problem-oriented policing. He later served four years as police chief in Eureka before becoming

chief in Santa Cruz in 2017. Mills, in accepting his new post, said in a statement that the Palm Springs department “has a longstanding tradition of inclusive community policing.” Former

Gov. Jerry Brown appointed Mills to serve on the Board of State and Community Corrections. He also served as executive chair of the California Violence Prevention Grant and on the Board of

the Herman Goldstein Award for Excellence in Problem-Oriented Policing. Mills takes over the post from Chief Bryan Reyes, who retired in August. _– City News Service_
