Response to a call to owners of money held by the county of San Diego has been slow, and the deadline to claim the funds is approaching, according to Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister.
Only 20 percent of the money has been claimed since a notice went out last month, so almost $329,000 remains in more than 4,000 accounts, he said. “I feel like the Maytag repairman,”
McAllister said. “We are waiting for people to claim these funds so that we can refund the money to people we owe,” McAllister said. “Time is running out and sadly very few members of the
public have stepped forward to claim their funds.” He said the owner of the largest account, who was owed more than $2,600, did collect his money. Accounts that go unclaimed by Sept. 8 will
go into the county’s general fund. People interested in finding out if they’re owed money can go to www.sdtreastax.com to review the Final Notice of Unclaimed Monies list. The accounts
generally involve property taxes or people who have done business with the county. _—City News Service_
