Lawmakers announced Wednesday that 124 elected Asian and Pacific Islander (API) leaders statewide have officially come out against the Republican-backed Gov. Gavin Newsom recall attempt. The
group of current and former elected officials vowed to work against the recall campaign in their local communities including San Diego. This announcement comes after Newsom delivered his
State of the State Address Tuesday evening detailing the actions his administration has taken to combat the pandemic. Over the course of the pandemic, Newsom has spoken out against the rise
in hate incidents against Asian Americans. In San Diego, violence toward Asians included an incident aboard a trolley last month in which an elderly Filipino woman was struck in the face.
The Legislature and Newsom recently allocated $1.4 million to help fund efforts by the StopAAPIHate reporting center, which tracks and reports hate incidents against Asian Americans. The
recall Newsom push has been bolstered by top national Republicans and Trump-supporters. The Republican National Committee and top Trump donors are funding the campaign.
