Mr. Peter Tillman was appointed as the Chief of Operating Officer/Associate Director for the Durham VA Health Care System effective January 5, 2020. Mr. Tillman is a respected leader among
nationwide peers for his successful management of complex work across the clinical, research, academic affiliated training, and emergency management missions at a flagship VA health system.
He has worked at the Durham VA Health Care System for the past 16 years, after one year of service at the Bedford VA in Massachusetts. He is responsible for an operating budget of $1.3B to
include the hospital and 12 outpatient sites of care across 27 counties. Prior to his current position, he served as the Chief of the Business Office, Strategic Planner, Chief Communications
Officer, and was a team player in other roles supporting safe, high-quality patient care. Mr. Tillman has an earned reputation for his passion in public service to Veterans, mentorship of
early health care careerists, and positive attitude when resiliency calls. Mr. Tillman received a Master of Public Administration degree and undergraduate degree, both from Northeastern
University in Boston. He is a graduate of the VA Health Care Leadership Development Program and Fellow in the Excellence In Government program with the Partnership for Public Service. He is
a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, past serving on three different local board committees.
