The Durham VA Health Care System installed two ‘Blessing Boxes’ for Veterans in need. "We recognize the challenges many Veterans face,” said Peter Tillman, DVAHCS Associate Director.
“These Blessing Boxes are a small but significant step in ensuring that no Veteran goes without.” A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on May 23, 2024, marking the official opening of the
boxes for Veterans. “These Blessing Boxes provide non-perishable food, toiletries, and other essential necessities in a convenient, dignified way for our Veterans to access,” said Kendra
Monden, Durham VA’s Chief for the Center of Development and Civic Engagement. “We want to continue our commitment to supporting the well-being of our Veterans.” Durham VA Engineering staff
and local volunteers were also recognized during the ceremony. Engineering staff constructed the boxes, while volunteers donated items. “These boxes symbolize a collective effort of the
Durham VA community, representing the spirit of giving back to our Veterans,” said Tillman. “Our mission is to support Veterans who may be facing hardship and hope to see an improvement in
their stability.” Supporting Veterans requires a multifaceted approach involving more than just meeting immediate needs. One of VHA's top priorities is to provide the soonest and best
care for our Veterans as we support them. The Blessing Boxes serve as a tangible reminder of our collective commitment to their well-being and health care by building a resilient and caring
community that uplifts those who have served our nation. Tillman completed an Executive Fellowship at WakeMed Health and Hospitals. During his fellowship, Tillman exchanged ideas and learned
best practices from the private sector. He attributes the idea of replicating the blessing boxes for Veterans to this experience. For those interested in donating items for the Blessing
Boxes, please contact our CENTER FOR DEVELOPMENT AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT (CDCE) AT (919) 286-0411 EXT. 177810 or visit the VA’s Centers for Development and Civic Engagement website.
