Muskogee , OK — Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center is eager to announce its selection as a Medical Foster Home (MFH) program expansion site. Medical foster homes are private homes in which

a VA-trained caregiver provides care and services to at least one individual. They may be appropriate for Veterans needing nursing home care who prefer a non-institutional alternative with

fewer residents. "We're asking our community to open the doors to their homes and help us with this mission," said Bri Sawyer-Fed, MSW, LCSW, the Medical Foster Home

coordinator at Jack C. Montgomery VAMC. As part of the MFH Program, Veterans are placed in approved homes with caregivers who provide personalized care, 24-hour supervision and room and

board. Approved caregivers must complete yearly training requirements and pass VA home safety inspections. Caregivers and residents over 16 must undergo federal background checks.  The MFH

program offers an affordable alternative to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The Veteran or their family is responsible for the cost of care and pays caregivers directly.

Veterans' health care fees are based on their needs and are set by their caregivers.  Lower-income Veterans may be eligible for VA Aid & Attendance Benefit, which can help cover

program costs. VA studies on medical foster homes show Veterans who receive care in a family-style setting experience improvements in their overall quality of life and well-being. If you
