PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational
competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education,
and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two
(PGY2) residencies.
Post Graduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Practice Residency Program
The Miami VA Healthcare System PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program emphasizes training in adult clinical pharmacy practice. The program provides training in various aspects of pharmacotherapy
within the acute, chronic, and ambulatory care settings. During each rotation, and under the guidance of preceptors, the resident will function as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist with all
associated responsibilities. Residency preceptors, in concert with the Residency Program Director (RPD), will evaluate the resident’s progress and identify areas of competence and
deficiency.
The Miami VA PGY2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency includes extensive experience in providing comprehensive psychiatric pharmaceutical care within the specialty areas of psychiatry and primary
care to the local Veteran population. This residency offers various learning opportunities, extending beyond traditional acute inpatient and outpatient psychiatry clinics and substance
abuse services, by incorporating the role of a psychiatric pharmacy resident within the Primary Care Mental Health Integration (PCMHI) team. PCMHI is an inter-professional mental health
team consisting of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and pharmacists. This group works collaboratively with Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) clinics in primary care and manages
psychiatric referrals from Primary Care PACT teams.
PGY2 Health Systems Pharmacy Administration & Leadership (HSPAL) Residency Program
The Miami VA PGY2 Health Systems Pharmacy Administration & Leadership (HSPAL) Residency Program emphasizes training in the fundamentals of pharmacy management and leadership in clinical
pharmacy and operational practice settings. Completion of this program will prepare residents to assume high level managerial, supervisory, and leadership responsibilities. Areas of
competence emphasized during the program include safe and effective medication-use systems, quality assurance, the management of human resources and labor relations, the management of
financial resources, use of technology, and advanced leadership. The residency lays the foundation for continued growth in management and leadership skills. Upon graduation, residents will
be prepared to assume a clinical or operational management/supervisory role in a variety of work settings including small to mid-size hospitals, large health systems, and pharmacy benefit
management organizations.
