Dr. Francis Cannizzo was appointed as the new Chief of Staff for VA New York Harbor Health Care System on April 20th, 2025. Dr. Cannizzo currently serves as the Chief of Staff at the Salem
VA Healthcare System, in Salem, Virginia. Dr. Cannizzo has held progressive leadership roles in the U.S. Army, private sector and VA. Prior to the Chief of Staff role at Salem, he was the
Director of Surgical Oncology at Hartford Healthcare Medical Group in Hartford, Connecticut. His other prior roles include Network Medical Director for Surgical Oncology at Western
Connecticut Health Network, Medical and Surgical Lead, Kuwait for University Health Network and International Senior Consultant in Surgical Oncology for Kuwait Cancer Control Center. In the
early part of his career, Dr. Cannizzo was an Attending Surgical Oncologist within the Division of Surgical Oncology at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. Dr. Cannizzo
is also a proud veteran, having served in the United States Army, where he remains on Reserve status. Dr. Cannizzo brings extensive clinical and leadership experience. Dr. Cannizzo is Board
Certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is also Board Certified by the American Board of Preventative Medicine, Clinical Informatic. In addition, he maintains certification by the
National Board of Nutrition Support. Dr. Cannizzo completed his Residency program at the State University of New York Downstate where he rotated as a Resident at the Brooklyn VA Medical
Center. Dr. Cannizzo’s academic background includes: • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from Boston University School of Medicine • Ph.D. in Pathology from Boston University Graduate School •
Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a focus in Healthcare Administration from the University of Massachusetts • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Exercise Physiology and Anatomy from
