cost of car repairs and servicing in France. The _Autorité de la Concurrence_ suspects that restrictive practices have resulted in "insufficient competition" in the sector and
excessive prices. Car repair costs have soared by 35% in 10 years, according to the group's initial research. The cost of spare parts is up 30% over the same period. The majority of
mechanics in France are affiliated with a single constructor - and four fifths of drivers who encounter a problem in their first two years of owning a car choose to visit a garage that is
part of their manufacturer's network instead of an independent mechanic. The competition authority believes that independent repair firms are being squeezed out of the market by
manufacturers, who make it more difficult for them to access the parts and technology they need to compete and efficiently do their job. A final report is expected next March. Photo: diego
