POLICE HAVE CORDONED OFF A HUGE AREA OF GREAT PARK WITH AN EXPLOSIVE ORDINANCE DISPOSAL TEAM BEING CALLED TO SWINHOE ROAD 16:51, 30 May 2025Updated 16:57, 30 May 2025 Residents have had to

evacuate their homes after a suspected unexploded device was discovered at a property in Newcastle's Great Park. Photos from the scene show that Roseden Way is taped off by police,

close to the junction with Brunton Lane, and officers are guarding the cordon as part of a big presence. The community centre, which was holding a kid's club event at the time, has been

evacuated, as have several places of residence. Here is all of the information that we have so far, which you can also find in our dedicated live blog here. SUSPECTED UNEXPLODED DEVICE

DISCOVERED A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At 12.20pm today (Friday), we received a report of a suspected unexploded device at an address on Swinhoe Road in the Great Park area

of Newcastle. "Emergency services are in attendance and a number of properties in the area have been evacuated as a precaution. A cordon has been put in place and an Explosive

Ordinance Disposal team is due to attend the scene. "Anyone in the area with concerns should approach an officer on duty." GREAT PARK RESIDENT SAYS SITUATION IS

'NERVE-WRACKING' The unnamed resident said: "I believe that a couple of lads found a grenade, and they have evacuated the community centre, and some people from their homes.

"They have been told to go to the racecourse or Morrisons, as police are waiting for a specialist team. It has been nerve-wracking, as we've known about it for a couple of hours

but things seem to have just fired up. "I am grateful for the community groups that we have to stay in contact, as without those, people just wouldn't know what was going on."

GREAT PARK COMMUNITY CENTRE EVACUATED Great Park Community Centre has posted online to say that staff have been advised to evacuate as a precaution. It is understood that the community

centre was hosting a kids club. All children are safe and with the group leaders, the community centre added. BOMB SQUAD CALLED TO THE SCENE Emergency services are at the scene with a police

cordon in place while awaiting the arrival of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal team. The council is supporting the emergency services and is implementing road closures in the area which may

cause some local disruption. WHAT PROVISION IS THERE FOR RESIDENTS? A Newcastle City Council spokesman said: "We are also in the process of setting up a rest centre for displaced

residents while the device is removed from the scene, which will be at Newcastle Racecourse at Gosforth Park. Any affected residents in need of somewhere to go are invited to make their way

there. "We appreciate this will be disruptive to residents affected and will do all we can to facilitate their return to their homes as soon as it is safe to do so." For more
