There is a large variety of tea in the world and people drink this hot beverage for different reasons, whether it’s for health purposes, for comfort on cold days or just out of habit. Today
(May 21) is International Tea Day, an occasion to celebrate the “world’s most consumed drink”, according to the United Nations (UN). It is believed that tea originated in northeast India,
north Myanmar and southwest China but Brits are also known to love a brew with UK brands like Tetley, PG Tips and Yorkshire Tea. The joke that Brits have a ‘tea time alarm’ recently went
viral on social media and the idea was created to confuse Americans. Although there is no actual alarm, many people from the UK do enjoy a cup of tea around the same time every day, often
with a biscuit or two. Amanda Rocchio shares nutrition tips and healthy recipes on TikTok where she shared a video discussing the ‘healthiest teas in the world’. 1. GREEN TEA Starting off
her TikTok clip, she said: “Drink green tea for energy and antioxidants.” Green tea is thought to be “one of the healthiest beverages on the planet”, according to Healthline. It contains
plant-based antioxidant compounds such as catechins which help to prevent cell damage. Also, research suggests that drinking green tea may benefit cognition, mood and brain function,
potentially due to compounds in green tea like caffeine and L-theanine. This beverage could help with fat burning as Healthline states that a 2022 review found that green tea’s ability to
positively influence metabolism is enhanced with aerobic or resistance exercise. 2. PEPPERMINT TEA Next, Amanda recommended drinking peppermint tea “to help with digestion.” Peppermint tea
is made by infusing peppermint leaves in hot water. BBC Good Food shared that some people report peppermint tea can help to ease bloating and indigestion. Also, as it’s caffeine-free, it
won’t act as a stimulant and the menthol in the mint may help to clear a blocked nose. 3. CHAMOMILE TEA Amanda praises chamomile tea for helping to “improve sleep quality and for
relaxation.” Chamomile tea may have sedative effects and help to improve sleep quality, as per BBC Good Food. Other benefits the food resource has listed of this type of tea are it may help
to regulate blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes, it may help those with mild anxiety and it may soothe muscle spasms in the gut and prevent issues caused by bacteria. 4. GINGER
TEA Continuing her video, Amanda said: “Drink ginger tea to aid with nausea and inflammation.” Eating Well states: “Sipping ginger tea may quell the queasy sensation in your stomach
associated with nausea and vomiting. “ The company spoke to Elena Ivanina, M.D., a board-certified integrative gastroenterologist who claimed that ginger “has been shown to help with nausea
during pregnancy, after surgery or chemotherapy and with motion sickness.” 5. HIBISCUS TEA Lastly, Amanda suggested drinking hibiscus tea for “skin health and beauty.” The hibiscus plant
blooms in a variety of colours and has exotic, vibrant petals. According to Green People, it has a “great reputation for increasing skin elasticity to give a stunning natural youth-boost.”
Also, due to the “slightly exfoliating effect of the organic acids found in the plant”, including citric acid and malic acid, Hibiscus “helps to speed up cell turnover, resulting in a more
even looking skin tone.
